FEBRUARY 2024
A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL EGAN

Dear NCHS Family,

We've reached the midpoint of the school year and are now entering the second semester! Exams are complete, and fresh courses are kicking off. February, a brief month, always zooms by, marking the start of winter break on Friday, February 16. Despite its brevity, this month remains a busy time of learning.

The upcoming course selection process is on the horizon. Teachers will recommend placements, and students will be making academic decisions. Counselors will meet with students to explore options in March. The 2024-2025 Program of Studies will be accessible for viewing in the first week of February.

Save the NC Color Drop date by the New Canaan High School Scholarship Foundation on Saturday, March 23. A helicopter will release 2,000 golf balls over a target at Waveny Park during this event. Need-based scholarships are granted to deserving NCHS graduates pursuing higher education at the undergraduate level. Golf balls are now available for purchase.  Click HERE for more information and to see all of the grand prizes.

For detailed information on applying for a scholarship, please visit the NCSF website. Any additional inquiries can be directed to your school counselor or Mrs. Granite in the School Counseling Office.

I look forward to the upcoming school events and wish everyone a successful second semester!

All the best,

Bill Egan, Principal

10th Grade Parent Education Meeting
Creating a College Testing Plan
Thursday, February 8 | 9:30 AM

This program for sophomore parents focuses on creating an appropriate testing plan for junior year. Our school counselors will be joined by testing expert Whitney Longworth from Summit Educational Group who will review the formats of the SAT and ACT and the new formats being introduced this year. The hope is that this program will give parents a good understanding of the options for testing to help their children decide what makes the most sense as they plan for next year. This will be a virtual event and will be recorded. Look for the Zoom link prior to the event.

Save the Date: March General Meeting with New Canaan CARES
Destigmatizing Mental Health
Wednesday, March 14 | 9:30 AM

We see it in the news. Simone Biles has the Twisties, Michael Phelps has ADHD, and Henry Winkler has Dyslexia. These brave people have shared something they struggled with. Why? One reason may be to help others who are struggling seek help.  Please join a discussion on how to connect with your child about their mental health without an eye-roll, learn some helpful conversation starters, and how to encourage your teen to help themselves or their friend. In addition, understand what services and organizations are available to the students and how they can feel empowered to seek help.

Additional Senior Internships Needed!

We are thrilled to share that this year's Senior Internship Program has 298 participating seniors! As we continue to shape this valuable experience for our students, we are reaching out to seek your support in providing additional internship opportunities. Key Program Information:

  • The program runs from May 21 to June 7
  • Students commit to 25 hours per week, typically spread across five days per week for five hours per day (hours to be discussed directly with your intern).
  • We value in-person internships, but remote options are also considered, on the condition that students engage in daily Zoom sessions with their supervisors.
  • Internships are required to be within a 30-mile radius of the school.
  • Students are paired with a school mentor who oversees weekly journals, conducts site visits, and offers additional support. -        Students are matched with the most suitable internship based on their preferences and committee interviews.  You will receive notice of your intern in March.
  • Each week you will verify the student's hours.

If you or someone you know is interested in hosting one or more of our amazingly talented students, please reach out to Kelly DelMazio. A simple registration process is required, and we kindly request that you complete it at your earliest convenience. The deadline for students to select internship sites is February 5. We are grateful for your support in guiding our students and enhancing their hands-on learning experience. Your investment in our future is truly invaluable.
